TAG Heuer Celebrates 160th Anniversary With Limited-Edition Revival Of The Classic Carrera 2447S
The newest Tag Heuer Carrera watch celebrates the 160-year anniversary of the company’s founding and is inspired by the original Carrera monochrome silver-dial watch of the early 1960s, known as the “2447S.”
The Tag Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition features many of the same design highlights as the original Carrera 2447S, such as the monochrome silver-colored dial, polished case and pushers, and its three azurage counters. The Carrera name and Heuer shield are printed on the dial below 12 o’clock, which gives the watch a retro appearance reminiscent of the original.
There are also notable changes. The most significant being the movement. The original model, introduced in 1963, was powered by the Valjoux 72. The tribute model uses a new Heuer 02 automatic movement, entirely Swiss-made in Tag Heuer’s Chevenez manufacture. It comprises 168 components.
One of the main benefits of the Heuer 02 is a power reserve of 80 hours, a 30-hour increase compared to the Caliber Heuer 01. Other benefits, according to Tag Heuer, include:
* A thinner construction, 6.95 mm compared to the Heuer 01’s 7.30 mm, which results in a thinner case design and improved comfort
* A vertical clutch that improves the precision of the start-and-stop functions as well as the running of the chronograph second hand;
* A column wheel, which provides more accurate and precise functionality; and
* Improved precision and greater stability with a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour).
The new movement resulted in changes to the design of the watch, compared to the original Carrera. For example, the shape is slightly different compared with the 1960s model. It’s also larger, measuring 39mm instead of the original 36mm. The seconds subdial is at 6 o’clock instead of 9 o’clock due to the difference in the construction of the Heuer 02 movement, compared with the Valjoux 72 movement.
Other changes from the original timepiece include the shape of the central hour and minute hands, which are now facetted and coated with beige SuperLuminova. In addition, the redesigned oscillating weight, visible through the screwed-down sapphire crystal, is adorned with a lacquer-filled engraving that distinguishes the timepiece as an anniversary edition. The steel portion of the caseback is engraved with “One of 1860” and “LIMITED EDITION.”
The watch comes with a black alligator strap and special packaging. This model is limited to 1,860 pieces, which is the year Heuer was founded.
In 1962, Jack Heuer, the CEO of Heuer at the time, learned of the legendary Carrera Panamericana, one of the most treacherous road races in the world. The original version of the race was held 1950 – 1954 along north-south Mexican section of the Pan-American Highway, which was recently constructed. It was a nine-stage, five-day race. Heuer was attracted to both the ambition of the race and with the word “carrera.” The first Heuer Carrera chronographs were produced in 1963.
Jack Heuer wanted the aesthetics of the Heuer Carrera chronograph to be pure and well-proportioned – features that make the watch useful for drivers who need to see the time at a glance during adrenaline-pumping races.
The company known today as Tag Heuer was founded as Heuer in 1860 by Edouard Heuer in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. The name stood until 1985 when TAG (Techniques d’Avant Garde), manufacturers of high-tech items, and British businessman Ron Dennis, acquired Heuer. In 1999, the majority of Tag Heuer shares were acquired by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.
